On Thursday, the 14th of November, we presented our project to manufacture compostable wood packaging at CIS Galicia (A Cabana, Ferrol). This initiative is part of the “Encaixa” project, developing sustainable packaging solutions with automated assembly, in an attempt to compete on an international level.
The project has been developed within the framework of a consortium formed by the following companies: Talendis Interesa, Puertas Betanzos, JJ Chicolino and Muarce Carpinteros. The Universidade de Santiago (USC), Universidade da Coruña (UDC) and Universidade de Vigo (UVigo) also participate.
In the presentation, made at the New materials for sustainable packaging workshop, organized by the Galician Ministry for Economy, Employment and Industry through the Axencia Galega de Innovación (GAIN), Rosa Arcas, Director of the company’s Innovation and Development department, described the solutions that are currently being created, including 100% “bio” adhesives made of lignin (without petroleum products) and “Tablex” packaging.
An alternative to plastic
Within the framework of the consortium, Betanzos HB has created a range of waterproof boards and flexible and ultra-thin boards, with a wide range of uses and with which it may be possible to manufacture cases for tablets and smartphones, placemats, flowerpots, cutlery and many other products, presented as a fully sustainable alternative to plastic.
Rosa Arcas explained that “all of the products created respond to the circular economy model, in that, once used, they are biodegradable and may be turned into compost.”
“Encaixa” has a budget of over 1 million euros, and is financed by the Axencia Galega de Innovación (GAIN) in the Conecta PEME 2018 program, supported by the Galician Ministry for Economy, Employment and Industry.
The project is co-financed with ERDF (UE) funds, having the thematic objective of promoting technological development, innovation and quality research within the “FEDER Galicia 2014-2020” operational program.
Five 100% Galician companies creating sustainable packaging
Betanzos HB
Researching, along with the members, the possibilities of using “Tablex” as a base for quality packaging and industrial integration, as well as the modification of the product’s appearance to increase possibilities for the final customer.
Talendis Interesa
Their work is aimed at product development and marketing and internationalization. It focuses on the development of technologies for the modification of wood to achieve absolute flexibility in packaging manufacture.
JJ Chicolino
Their project develops new possibilities for component connection, automation and integration of processes and new means of transforming raw materials via artificial vision technologies and automated assembly, to ensure new industrialization possibilities.
Puertas Betanzos
Exploring new transformation processes to diversify their production and enter the middle ground of the packaging value chain. To do so, they are examining new options in assembly and anchoring that avoid the use of ironworks, etc.
Mucarce Carpinteros
Manufacturing lightweight packaging and special formats that are focused on the logistics of the Contract products.
