European funding for the research of new applications for the Galician eucalyptus

Betanzos HB is one of the companies taking part in two projects, Innobiorre and Demadera, both selected by the Innovation Galician Agency (Gain) to be financed with European funds thanks to the plan Conecta Peme 2016-2018. The Ministry of Economy, Work and Industry in Galicia aims to encourage cooperation between Galician pymes and other agents in the R+D+I Galician System with this plan.

Both projects, on board until 2018, are based on new high valued applications for eucalyptus starting with a wood extract concentrate created during the production process of high density boards. The R+D department in Betanzos HB has been for years researching possible applications of this co-product: 100% natural and with high-valued compounds such as lignin, tannins, polyphenol and sugar.

Innobiorre will research the application of this product to improve the resistance and durability of construction elements such as asphalt, tarmac and cements. Betanzos HB shares the research with other companies such as Extraco, Soutos Sativa, GalaiControl, Indutec and Renga, and the collaboration of the University of Santiago de Compostela and Vigo.

On the other hand, the project Demadera will develop the possible use of wood extract as an additive to wine and fizzy drinks. In this project, Betanzos HB works side by side with companies such as Conejos de Angora Gallegos and Mercantia Desarrollos Alimentarios, as well as the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Anfaco-Cecopesca and Evega-Ingacal.
